Pushed t/9784 based on #9706 (t/9706b) with each it shares first commit (introduction of elementPath#direction).
Listener on contentDirChanged added in toolbar plugin was part of original fix proposed in #9706, but I don't know why. It should be investigated if it makes sense - maybe some code may be removed after adding that.
