Follow up from #4231:
If the editor has been set so it can be resized only vertically, instead of having the grabber at the right-bottom corner it should be displayed at the bottom with a different picture. Same applies for horizontal-only resize.

Sound like you are looking for a "less user confusing approach" but isn’t this a little overhead?
Resize handle in the corner plain, easy to understand and very neutral (it can be used for both directions).
Besides once user stars resizing the editor he will quickly realize which way he can and can't move.
